24 Hours in Sophia Antipolis, France

I took a brief trip to Southern France for – wait for it – a job interview. Yep, that’s right. This full-time traveller/wanderer is actually considering the possibility of of setting down roots again. Crazy I know! (I’m young and I got my health, what do I want with a job? – name that movie)

It’s uncommon to find companies in France with English speaking jobs for expats (While I did study French in school it’s been a long time and I am far, far away from being skilled enough to have working proficiency) and even more rare to find them outside of Paris. So when I came across this opportunity in Nice, it caught my eye.

Well, okay, not technically Nice. About 30 minutes outside of the city of Nice is an area called Sophia Antipolis which is basically the Silicon Valley of France, nay, Europe. It’s a huge tech hub/mecca of businesses and schools and research. (Yes, I work in tech).

So I arrived in Nice and then immediately left and went my hotel (where I checked in all in French!) and spent the evening preparing for my interview.

The hotel breakfast in the morning did not disappoint in terms of baguettes offered. Lunch was workplace cafeteria food, but you know, French style. So patés, cheese plates, tartines, etc. It was as I was enjoying my meal overlooking the French Alps & Riviera that I thought to myself “Gee, I guess if I had to come to an office everyday…this wouldn’t be too bad…”

At the end of my day of interviews – I went from being pretty lukewarm about the idea of abandoning my carefree life of travel to kind of excited by the prospect of re-joining the working stiff community to pursue my love of travel by working in the industry. I decided to go treat myself for celebrate surviving (and hopefully thriving?) the grueling interview gauntlet so I walked, but more like floated, through fields of wildflowers to a little area with a few cafes. I got myself a sidewalk table, a glass of rose, and sat and relaxed and contemplated this new and exciting possibility.

The next day I left Sophia Antipolis to spend an exciting 48 Hours in Nice and have a slightly harrowing evening adventure at the Cannes Film Festival.
