24 Hours in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

My friend and I drove to Trincomalee which is a 5 1/2 hour across the beautiful country of Sri Lanka. We arrived and checked in to the Hotel Blue Waves and immediately sat down for a traditional lunch of Rice & Curry accompanied by a cool Lion Lager.

Then we headed struck out on foot to explore the beach. After our walk, we headed back to the hotel to grab the car to drive over to Koneswaram Hindu Temple. While it was closed, it was beautiful to explore the temple in cool, solitude.

We headed back to our hotel and struck out in hopes of grabbing some kottu in town, but apparently the town completely closes up after 8pm so we were out of luck. Finally, we got back to our hotel where they were kind enough to make us some cheese kottu despite the rather late hour.

We started our next day with a traditional breakfast of kiribath (coconut milk rice) and sambol at our hotel. Then we headed back to Koneswaram Hindu Temple which was a totally different place when full of vendors and visitors during the day. We stopped at one of the stalls to pick up a snack of green mango with chili sauce and then headed back into town. There, we had a bit of an adventure trying to get some more cash. Apparently many Sri Lankan ATMs are not connected to the international network, so my Thai & US bank cards didn’t get us far. After striking out, we headed back on the road.
