I was walking down Sukhumvit Soi 55 today on my way to The Commons when the above sight made me stop dead in my tracks and do an actual double-take. This caused the guy standing outside to ask me if I was OK, since I walk at a NYC pace which is very rare in these parts – and also makes a dead stop quite noticeable. Fellow NYC bar lovers will spot immediately what caught my eye – the Death & Co menu tucked away in the side window.
So I asked him what the deal was. He told me that it’s a brand new restaurant and they just did their soft-open last night. He also just so happened to be the head chef. He let me take a peak inside, they were still cleaning up from the launch party and weren’t open yet, but I promised to come back later for dinner because Death & Co added to the Beatles tshirt he was sporting made him a pretty cool dude in my book.
As promised, I pulled myself from the many tempting dinner options at The Commons and came back for dinner. I took a seat at the bar and started with the Formie Nog (Irish whisky, cherry Heering, orange juice, & egg nog THB 320). I should’ve gotten this as my dessert as it was a delicious glass of Christmas. (Aside: It was a martini glass which I constantly struggle with getting right for pictures, hence the lack of one).
To start I ordered the Deep Fried Mac n Cheese (185 THB), because d’uh. The lighting was low which makes for sub-par iPhone photos, so it doesn’t look as appetizing as it should. For my main, I ordered the Too Young to Die (Pan seared baby se bass served with caramel-beetroot, grilled asparagus, gnocchi, lemon and leek sauce THB 420) on the recommendation of the chef. Unfortunately, I wasn’t wowed, especially considering the aggressive 420 THB price point.
To accompany my meal, I asked the bartender to go ahead and customize a cocktail for me with the direction that I’d like it to involve some bourbon and a cherry – because I noticed they have the real bar cherries and I’m a sucker for those. It was top notch. I was very surprised that BK Magazine’s write up didn’t mention the mixologists here.
The truly delightful part of Hunts is the vibe and decor. Sophisticated yet cozy, it’s a great space to spend some quality time with some good company. They’re in a tough location – Thong Lo Soi 55 is flooded with great bars and eateries, but I’m hoping they get their legs under them and do well!
Update: My only complaint with Hunts was that when they opened they were referring to themselves as “Hunts Speakeasy” which as you can clearly see, couldn’t be further from the truth since it is a very obvious storefront on Soi Thonglo 55. I am happy to see that they’ve since updated the name to a more appropriate “Hunts Eatery & Bar”
