Château de la Napoule in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, France

I was immediately captivated by the charm of the place. It felt like stepping into The Secret Garden. Then I started to read some of the plaques and discovering the story of this enchanted place. The castle was restored by Henry Clews a sculpture from New York in the early 1930s along with the input of his architect / designer of a wife: Marie! This was the home of an American woman named Marie. Maybe I can convince whoever owns it now to keep the tradition going and let me move in?

Then I walked into the courtyard where I encountered this statue and was incredibly struck by it.

I examined it and then read the plaque and found that it is called the “God of Humormystics” was designed by Henry and presented to Marie as their wedding present. He stands in protest against materliastic civilization based solely on cold scientific facts and stands to serve intangible sources of inspiration such as the couple’s tagline of “Myrth, Myth and Mystere” (Mirth, Myth, & Mystery).

Inside the castle I continued to be delighted. It’s a reasonable size – not ostentatious. I loved the pink couches, I hope it comes furnished. I mean, my name is literally carved everywhere, it just makes sense that I should live here.

Henry Clews’ sculpture was certainly interesting. Some things were deliberately grotesque or phallic, his art definitely makes a strong statement.
