It’s hard to talk about brunch in Bangkok without hearing the name “Dexter”, so when I saw that the Bangkok Young Expats Meetup group meets here regularly it seemed like a great opportunity to give it a try and to meet some new people. I made my way down to Sathorn and found a modern, Scandinavian style cafe and settled in to our big group table.
Right away I was very intrigued by the coffee section of the menu. At 130 THB each it featured selections from various countries with very interesting ingredients such as “chunks of mozzarella cheese” (Finland) and “egg yolk and honey” (Austria). I ordered the “England – Coffee Grog”. An espresso double shot with steamed milk and butter, brown sugar, nutmeg, & cinnamon served with a lemon and an orange slice.
For my meal I felt compelled to order the Æggekage (388 THB) since I’ve never seen or tried it before and it was highly recommended by one of the cafe’s owners. It’s a Danish style omelette topped with cucumber, tomato, scallions, and crispy pork belly with some rye bread.
The pork belly was much too dry to be enjoyable which left a pretty boring, plain omelette. So what started as an intriguing and exotic dish wound up being fairly bland. It was also a pretty small portion considering the 388 THB price.
While I really enjoyed the coffee, I was pretty underwhelmed with the experience as a whole and don’t see myself going out of my way to return.
